Fishing rod holders have many benefits. Whether you fish alone or with friends or family, having a boat equipped with good fishing rod holders will provide you with more functionality and convenience.
Determine the Right Location
For most boats, the main rod holder (the one used by the person operating the boat) is best placed at a 90-degree angle to the centerline of the boat. However, other areas require different locations. Generally speaking, the greater the angle, the more space you will need under the gunwale. Regardless, the rod holder should always be located dead center. Once you have found the best location and ensure it does not conflict with any existing equipment, tape off the location in preparation for installation.
Use the Right Tools
To install a fishing rod holder, you will first need to drill a hole in the gunwale of your boat. Once you have done this, place the fishing rod holder into the hole to make sure it fits, and if it does, remove the protective tape. Using marine sealant, place the fishing rod holder back into place and make sure it is flush with the gunwale. If the sealant squeezes out from the sides, this can be cleaned up later.
The next step is to install the support nut and washer using the rod holder mounting sleeve. Squeeze another small dollop of marine sealant around the base of the rod holder and tighten it as hard as you can. For added stability, move the rod holder back and forth. After tightening the rod holder, the last step is to thoroughly clean the area with a rag soaked in alcohol-based marine cleaner. Then, let it dry completely before taking the boat out on the water.
